Forgiveness

“Love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31)

A teacher decided to let her class play game.

She asked each student to bring some potatoes in a plastic bag. Each potato will be given the name of the person the student hates. The number of potatoes that a student will put in his/her plastic bag will increase depending on the number of people he/she hates.

The next day, every student brought some potatoes with the name of the people he/she hated. Some were carrying 2 potatoes; some 3 while some up to 5 potatoes. The teacher then asked the students to take the plastic bag wherever they go for a week.

The students began their game. As days went by, the potatoes became rotten and let out unpleasant smell. Besides, the plastic bags of those who were carrying 5 potatoes were heavier. The students began to complain. The game ended after a week and the students were relieved.

At the class, the teacher asked how they felt while carrying the potatoes. The students began to complain about their unpleasant experience.

The teacher explained, “This is how you will feel when you carry your hatred for someone in your heart. You will have to carry the stink of hatred wherever you go. If you are unable to bear the smell of rotten potatoes just for a week, imagine the state of carrying the stench of hatred for a lifetime.”

Let us learn to love and forgive others despite their shortcomings.
