The Bible
encourages, “Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you
in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
Nehemiah 11:17 tells that a man was appointed to pray with thanksgiving in accordance with the will of God before the kings of Israel went for the battle. Only after the prayer was over did the kings go out for war. And they came back with victory.
Look at the life of Lord Jesus. He had to fight a battle for mankind. In Gethsemane, he encountered a struggle. In Matthew 26:38, we see Him telling in great distress, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.” Do you know what happened then?
I’d like to tell at this point the vision a servant of God had seen.
When Lord Jesus was in Gethsemane, in great agony, He was pleading to God: “O my Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.” At that time, satan appeared before Him and said, “You are greatly distressed. Is it God’s will that You should give Your life on the cross? Deny the will of God.”
But just because Lord Jesus was filled with a divine strength, He said, “My Father, not as I will, but as You will. I give Myself to Your will.” He gave Himself as a thanksgiving sacrifice. At that time, satan screamed, “Oh, I am ruined, I am ruined,” and fled from that place. Yes, just because Lord Jesus gave His life to the will of God with a grateful heart, He was able to overcome satan.
Even today, shall we carry out the will of God? May be you are going through sickness and poverty. You may lack wisdom or in need of a job. In the midst of this struggle, it is God’s will that you should thank Him, “Lord, how much You love me. You will never forsake me. Thanks be to You.” It is very easy to thank God when everything is fine. But it is a difficult task to thank God when our faith is tested through the fire. When we thank God even at that time, the Holy Spirit will pour out the love of God in our hearts as said in Romans 5:5.
The eternal Spirit that filled Lord Jesus will fill us too (Hebrews 9:14). And even we, through the love of God, shall commit our lives into His hands and say “Thank You Lord.”
Yes, it is God’s will for us to give Him thanks. There may be problems and troubles in life. But Lord Jesus is high above them. Therefore, let us thank God instead of weeping. Every problem will vanish. Will you look to Him today? He will give you His Spirit to carry out His will. He will give you strength to forgive the sins of people. He will give you power to heal the sick. He will give you grace to thank Him in the midst of troubles.
Will you open your heart and say, “I am willing to fulfill God’s will.” The Holy Spirit will fill you right now. The world and its lusts will pass away; but the one who does the will of God abides forever.
The Bible encourages, “Pray continually” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Pray unceasingly with thanksgiving. Then God will fill you with His divine strength and enable you to fulfill His will. He shall give you victory in life.
