THE POWER TO FORGIVE

By Paul Dhinakaran

Dearly beloved,

The Lord Jesus has all authority in heaven and on earth.

The Lord Jesus not only forgives us our sins, but also helps us to forgive those who sin against us. In John 20:22,23, we see that having got all authority, He wrought victory over sin and curse. Before ascending up to heaven, He appeared to His disciples and breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven.”

How is it possible for us to forgive one another? It is only through the Holy Spirit. The Bible says in John 16:8 that the Holy Spirit will convict the world of sin. That is why the Lord said, “My children! I shall not only forgive and forget your sins but also help you to forgive one another.”

In Matthew 9:6, the Lord Jesus proves that He has power on earth to forgive. When the paralytic man was brought to Him, He understood in a second that the sins of that man were the cause of his disease. He said, “Your sins are forgiven you.” Then He said, “Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.” Immediately he was healed, he took his bed and went to his house joyfully.

When the Holy Spirit comes into us, rivers of living water shall arise out of us and flow among the people (John 7:38).

Many years ago, when I was speaking in a special youth meeting in Coimbatore, a young man was present in the crowd. Do you know why he had come there? His friend had said to him, “You wait for me there at 10 a.m. We shall go to the morning show.” So he had been waiting there for a long time, but his friend did not turn up. To pass the time, he came inside and listened to the words which I spoke that day. He mocked at every word that I said and at the youth who had been rejoicing in the infilling of the Holy Spirit.

The prayer time came. The Spirit of the Lord descended on every young person. Everybody glorified the Lord being filled with the Holy Spirit. They shouted and praised God. The Holy Spirit did mighty deeds. Suddenly, the Spirit of the Lord descended on that young man. At that moment, a voice spoke, “Their lives are good but what about yours?” Again and again, these words sounded in his heart. Without his knowledge, he fell down and started rolling; he lamented, “Lord, forgive me.” Nobody could control him even when the meeting was over. Only then his friend came to take him to the movie. He was confused on looking at his friend who was weeping and lamenting. The life of that man turned upside down on that day! Today, he is doing the ministry of the Lord mightily!

When the Holy Spirit descends on us, the Lord helps us to forgive one another; through us, rivers of living water spring forth. Without the Holy Spirit, no man can forgive others’ sin!

The Lord Jesus said concerning Himself: “The Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” (Matthew 9:6). As Jesus is God, He has divine authority to forgive. Shall we seek Him who is merciful and forgiving? When He comes into us, He will help us to forgive others.

Prayer:

Loving Lord Jesus,

You are merciful and You have authority to forgive sins. I seek forgiveness from You. Please grant me forgiveness through Your precious blood. Fill me with the Holy Spirit and help me to forgive others. Let rivers of living water arise out of me and flow among others.

In Your matchless name I pray.

Amen.
